One of the most frequent questions we get from our visitors is “how does a stapleless stapler work?”.  It’s hard to imagine that a little gadget can actually hold paper together without the need for staples or other materials.  Plus, the name it’s self is a contradiction – a stapleless stapler?  Kind of makes you think of wireless cables or paperless copy machines, lol!

The truth is that the design of today’s stapleless staplers is quite ingenious.  Whomever invented this was quite the thinker.  In this post I will do my best to explain how a stapleless stapler works so read on as we uncover the “how” behind this unique and clever gadget!

How A Stapleless Stapler Works

At the most basic level, a stapleless stapler works by punching a small hole in to a stack of papers and folding the punched out paper back to form a clasp.  Some stapleless staplers punch this hole in the shape of a “V” and fold the “V” up to seal the stack.  Other stapleless staplers use different shapes.  Some of the more advanced stapleless staplers actually weave the punched out paper back in to it’s self to create that bond.  The actual mechanics of this vary from one stapleless stapler to another but the concept is the same.

Sometimes people assume that there is string or glue involved in a stapleless stapler but this is not true.  There are no extra elements needed to make a stapleless stapler work.  They simply use the paper it’s self to do the trick.

If you wanted a first hand view of how a stapleless stapler works you can buy a clear stapleless stapler that will let you watch the inner workings.  For curious minds this is an ideal choice, plus it makes a neat conversation piece.  “Hey, check this out – look close”!  Most people have never heard of these gadgets and are quite intrigued when you bring yours out to show them how a stapleless stapler works.

Of course the technique of using the paper it’s self to create a “bond” between papers does have some limitations.  The number of pages you are looking to join is the most common limitation you will find with any brand or style of staple free stapler.  Today’s units can process around 5 pages at once with no problem.  Some of the more advanced staple free staplers can handle up to 10.  Of course this means that they are not ideal for large stacks of paper which means that you will probably need some sort of backup traditional stapler.  Still, if most of your stapling involves only a few sheets they are perfectly ideal for this task!

So, there you have it – that is how a stapleless stapler works!  It is quite clever actually and as more people become interested in stapleless staplers we are sure to see more innovation in the operation of these unique gadgets.
